Lunar Hair Care: Cutting Your Hair By The Moon’s Phases

Lunar Hair Care: Cutting Your Hair By The Moon’s Phases By:  Jessica Ourisman If all the talk of moon rituals, birth chart readings, and rising signs hasn’t clued you in, interest in astrology is mainstream. The recent surge brings new opportunities to indulge our cosmic sides. Most notably? A phenomenon called lunar hair care, and rumor has it that these moon-inspired trims can actually score you longer, thicker locks. What is lunar hair care? Lunar hair care is one way that astrology fans have incorporated the power of the stars into their recent self-care practices. It involves syncing hair trims with the lunar cycles, letting cosmic timing set the pace of an otherwise mundane task. The idea is that trimming the hair in time with certain cycles of the moon can bring about longer, stronger, and lusher strands. There’s some precedent for this belief, too. Farmers have relied upon the moon’s phases for guidance on when to plant crops for optimal growth, dating as far back as the 1800s. (See the Farmer’s Almanac.) Lunar hair care simply applies the same planetary principles to us—specifically, to our hair. “The pull of the full moon and new moon creates a healthier, more productive garden. This is the same approach we take in lunar hair care,” says Stefani Padilla, a hairstylist and shaman. “Just as the moon pulls the tides in the ocean, it pulls upon all bodies of water: This causes moisture to rise on earth, which encourages growth.” It is this upward movement of water, cued by the moon, that is at the root of lunar hair care. After all, humans are made up mostly of water—and it makes up approximately 10 to 13% of our hair. How to practice lunar hair care: Just as we plant seeds of intention with the new moon and release that which no longer serves us at the full moon, we can do the same with our physical bodies: 1. Set intentions during the new moon. Understanding the specifics of syncing your hair care with the moon cycles takes the waxing and waning of the moon into consideration. New moons, at the very beginning of the lunar cycle, are barely visible in the sky. Esoterically, this is believed to be the ideal time for planting the seeds of intention; so, as the moon is on the brink of growing in the sky, this is when to make your hair goals explicit (i.e., full, thick, lengthy locks). “The new moons are a powerful moon phase to plant seeds of intention as it is a window in time to manifest—including longer hair and quicker growing,” says Padilla. As you are manifesting your best possible mane, Padilla reminds us that positive self-talk is the missing ingredient for success. “When we repeat the narrative of ‘my hair isn’t growing, my hair is falling out, my hair is dull, my hair is dry and brittle,’ we are creating that reality,” she continues. “Hair, just like our being, requires positive affirmations in order to transform into what we are trying to create.” 2. Continue your hair care routine. Just as personal growth comes through work, so does hair growth. Even if you follow the lunar charts for your trims, it will mean nothing if you spend the time in between not caring for your strands and scalp—or even worse, damaging it with excessive product buildup, regular heat styling, or physical wear and tear. First, make sure to keep your ends hydrated and limit damage. While this won’t stimulate growth at the root, it will mean less length taken off at your next trim. You must also practice regular scalp care by eliminating buildup and encouraging circulation. When you have too much buildup from oils, products, and debris, it can cause inflammation at the root. When this happens long term, chronic inflammation can even lead to hair loss. Make sure to clean the scalp regularly with a safe shampoo—or even a scalp exfoliator. Finally, consider your diet and supplements. Eating foods high in fatty acids and vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid may encourage hair growth and reduce hair loss. And supplements like iron, magnesium, zinc, collagen, and biotin may support hair health1.* 3. Time a cut seasonally around the solstice or equinox. If you are trying for length, you’re recommended to get a trim every 10 to 12 weeks, which coincidentally is about the length of a season. In astrology, the summer and winter solstice and fall and spring equinox are very important. These four time periods signal a moment of transition. Use these as markers for your own style change—yes, even if that style change is just a trim. “Our hair is an extension of ourselves. When we cut the actual strands of the hair, even the tiniest trim, we can feel an energetic shift,” she says. 4. Trim during a full moon. The full moon—when the moon most visible and on the precipice of waning—is like the peak before the descent, a time symbolically affiliated with release. “When we cut our hair, we are ‘releasing’ a part of ourselves [that] we no longer want to carry,” she reveals. Letting go of that which doesn’t serve you at the full moon is ripe with symbolism for trimming away the dead, dull, split ends of your hair at this time. “This moon phase is a great time for thickening and strengthening,” Padilla also says—so even if you’re not yet due for a trim, consider using this time for a strengthening or hydrating treatment. No better excuse for a night in during a full moon than a hair mask, no? The bottom line: Here’s the thing: Manifestation is a personal practice that means different things to different people. We would never squash your dreams of a lunar hair care makeover, but this is not the type of practice that can be scientifically backed. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth trying. “I encourage ritual as a means of taking time out from our busy schedules and the daily noise around us to create a dedicated space to care for both our

7 Funny Things About Curly Hair

7 Funny Things About Curly Hair By: Sassycritic.com I am part of a few great blogging groups on Facebook and decided to join a blogging challenge that was presented in one of the groups this week! Given a writing prompt, I had to fill in the blank following the words “7 funny things about _____” and create a post centered around that title. One of the first things that popped into my head that I could certainly create a list around was curly hair! It’s something I (and many other naturally curly sisters) deal with on a daily basis and although we have fun with it, it certainly has it’s quirks! 1. Hair Pins Get Lost Easily 🔍 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve neatly placed hair pins in my hair for a cute up do or bad hair day hairstyle only to be short a pin or two when taking it down later in the day. No lie, I once found the missing pin the next day while washing my hair. I knew it would reveal itself at some point but the next day?!?! Curly hair eats pins like the dryer eats socks, apparently. 2. Your Man Can’t Run His Fingers Through Your Hair 💆🏽 You know those sweet or romantic moments when you’re snuggling with your boo and he caresses your head and begins running his fingers through your hair from root to end? Well, I don’t. Not because I don’t want to or that it doesn’t feel good. It’s a very sweet, loving gesture. But the way my curly hair is set up…his hand won’t get very far before the curls wrap themselves around his fingers, trapping his hand in there like a hairpin in a ‘you gon’ learn today!’ kind of way (in my best Kevin Hart voice). Maybe opt for a foot or back rub instead. 3. Your Weather App is Your Friend 🌦 Curly hair can be very temperamental and sometimes the slightest change in weather can make a huge difference. I can use the same products in my hair for 5 consecutive days and have different outcomes due to changes in humidity, dew point, or temperature alone. As a matter of fact, there are some curly hair products that are best used in high humidity versus cold, dry air and vice versa. For example, it’s best to use products with humectants (ingredients that keep moisture balanced in the hair and skin) when the dew point is just right. Who knew you’d have to study meteorology to achieve a good hair day?! 4. Getting Food in Your Hair is a Good Thing 🥑 Taking care of your curls is so important and should include regular deep conditioning treatments. There are many products in the stores for that purpose but you can also whip up a bomb conditioner in the comfort of your kitchen! Depending on what your purpose is, be it moisture or strengthening, you can be mixing, whipping, or mashing foods like eggs, mayonnaise, avocados, or bananas (to name a few) and adding them to your favorite conditioner and/or oils like olive oil or coconut oil. It feels, and sometimes smells, weird sometimes when you slather it all in your hair but the results can yield shiny, bouncy curls that are poppin’ for days! 5. Products Galore 🛍 Finding the right products for YOUR curly hair is a trial and error process. It can be frustrating and can get pretty expensive. But it can also get a little addictive. New products come out all the time and you’re going to want to try almost all of them at some point. I would venture to say that the average curly girl has a mixture of tried and true bottles of “holy grail” products as well as half-empty, barely used products that just didn’t make the cut. 6. These Curls Ain’t Loyal! 😕 Every day is a new day in the world of curls. Some curly girls give their manes a name because they have their own identity and personality. Curly hair may or may not cooperate from day to day so you say a little prayer to your curly god mother as you shampoo, condition, rake, shingle, and scrunch hoping for a good, selfie-worthy hair day. 7. Everybody Wants to Touch Your Hair 🙅🏽 I mean, I guess you can’t blame them when your curls are perfectly poppin’. The thing is, if you haven’t already figured it out, we curly girls work very hard to achieve a good wash n go, twist out, rod set, or whatever style we choose to wear that day. It’s flattering when other’s take notice and compliment the results. But to many of us, our curly tresses are like an extension of our physical bodies that also require personal space. Wanting to touch our coils is understandable, but please don’t touch without asking first. Mmmkay? Feel free to share this post and tell me in the comments what else you’d add to the list!  -Marsha 💋 And if you need to cut those curls, come on into the Mug Shoppe

Top 4 Long Hairstyles for Each Male Hair Type

Top 4 Long Hairstyles for Each Male Hair Type By: Rogelio Grow your mane long and rock any of these 4 long hairstyles! If you’re a long haired dude or if you’re planning on growing your mane long, then I’m here to tell you that you have quite a few hairstyles to choose from. Most guys when growing their hair long seem to think that all that they will be able to do to their lengthy manes will be tying them into boring ponytails; that’s until they discover how malleable and easy to style long hair can really be. In fact, as a dude with curly hair myself, I’d go as far as to say that curly hair is easier to style when it is long than when it is at a short length or at a medium length. Now, growing your curly hair to shoulder length and beyond is another story, but, once you get there, you realize that your hair-growing journey was well worth it. Regardless of your hair type as a dude and whether you have straight hair, wavy hair, coiled curly hair or kinky curly hair, I will tell you in this very moment that you do indeed have a nice range of hairstyles to choose from once your mane gets too long for your girlfriend’s linking, your wife’s linking or even your mother’s liking. What’s even better is that long hair is quite malleable (as in, it will bend and do whatever you want it to do), hence you can get quite creative with your luscious mane if you’re feeling up for the challenge (yes, I said “luscious”, not “lustrous”, and there’s a good reason for that). Right off the bat, I can think of at least a couple of dozens of epic long hairstyles that I could do to my (manly) mane right now, and you can even learn about a good number of them in this long hairstyles guide for men that covers a great range of styles that you probably didn’t even know existed! Furthermore, if you browse around Manly Curls, you will also get to read about plenty of different long hairstyles that I’ve suggested and recommended over the years, so, really, I think we can conclude that growing your mane long is too awesome for words and that you will become a sexy beast once your hair graces your shoulders. Well, that’s only if you manage to not fall prey to the inexplicable attraction that stupid hairstyles like the Skullet have in men under the age of 35 (and, yes, I too have fallen prey to them). So, to celebrate the epicness of being a long-haired dude, I’m going to give you guys one great long hairstyle for each of the 4 male hair types (if still unsure of what these hair types are, then see my hair type guide explaining the 4 hair types for men). The following 4 long hair styles that I’ll be recommending to you are both easy to grow and get, and all that you will need to be able to style them is at least 10 inches of hair length. Likewise, each of these 4 long hairstyles are interchangeable with each of the 4 male hair types, meaning that you can also get the other 3 long hairstyles that aren’t listed for your hair type, so, all in all, you’re looking at 4 hairstyles for long hair that you can get at any time, provided that you have hair of at least 10 inches in length. Ready to rock that mane? Then let’s kick it! Ponybun hairstyle for straight hair You probably haven’t heard of the “ponybun” word before, and, that’s for a good reason. Amidst a sea of man buns and top knots flooding each American and European city, few guys have yet to realize that, by only tying their buns half way through, they can radically change their bun to look different to what the rest of the crowd is wearing. “Ok, Rogelio”, you may say, “but what on this beautiful planet is a ponybun hairstyle?” you may ask. Right, a ponybun is a hairstyle that has your hair tied in an unclosed bun, hence a tail of hair forms resembling a ponytail that hangs off the bun. And thus the “ponybun” portmanteau meaning a “bun with a ponytail”. To get a ponybun, you would simply grab your hair so as to tie it into a bun but, when it’s time to choke the bun with the hair band (i.e. close it so no hair is loose inside the bun), you only do so for half of the hair length making up the bun. Ergo, about half of the bun’s length remains outside the bun and thus hangs down as a ponytail. Seriously, it sounds more complicated than it really is, and the ponybun-styling motion is quite intuitive; I was doing ponybuns like a boss years ago even before I decided to put a name to what I was doing intuitively. Last year in 2014, the ponybun was briefly in the spotlight as the world’s biggest male-diva Jared Leto decided to sport one during the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. At the time, the man bun hairstyle was all the rage (see the next hairstyle below) and, out of nowhere, here came Jared Leto wearing a hairstyle which, until then, only women had worn publicly. However, the ponybun didn’t really hit it mainstream, even though the millions of dudes with man buns in 2014 were unknowingly doing ponybuns when first learning about tying a man bun. By now, you’re probably wondering what a ponybun hairstyle looks like, so here it is in all its glory. (see photo below) His Viking ancestors would be proud You may or may not get an undercut haircut as per the ponybun in the picture above, but one thing is for sure: you will turn heads with a ponybun. Fade Haircut for Men: High, Low, Temple and Top

Fade Haircut for Men: High, Low, Temple and Top By: Rogelio The Fade haircut is a men’s haircut that relies on having the hair on the sides and back of the head tapered in length gradually until no more hair is left on the skin. The Fade haircut doesn’t require a specific length on the top of the head; a male can have as much length as he may wish to, which gives rise to a lot of hair creativity with a Fade haircut, plus the fade can also be implemented as a haircut to complement plenty of men’s hairstyles. Lastly, the Fade is very commonly seen in military haircuts as it satisfies the requirement of keeping the hair very short. The Fade haircut should be performed by a skilled barber or hairdresser as a fade is one of the hardest haircuts to get right. To do the Fade haircut, the hair on the back and sides is clipped in layers and the layers are then smoothed, which gives a nice and gradual reduction in hair length. The hair always ends at the skin (i.e. fades), which is known in barbershop jargon as “done/clipped to skin”); this means that the hair’s length becomes progressively shorter until the hair is not visible any more. There are several types of fade haircuts, and the only commonality between them is that the hair on the sides and back of the head decreases in length until there is no more hair (i.e. the skin shows). The 5 types of fade haircuts A Fade can be done in different ways although there are three main types of fade haircuts: Regular, High or Low. On top of that, a Fade haircut can also be coupled with a specific haircut on the top of the head, giving rise to an extra two types of fade haircuts: High Top Fade and Temple Fade. If you are unsure about what type of fade haircut you want, I advise you to simply go for a regular fade haircut first and then, if you don’t like it, ask for a low fade haircut. If you continue to not like the results of the fade, then ask for a high fade haircut; if you don’t like the high fade haircut, you will have to end up clipping all of your sides and back to a zero or without a guard! Fade haircut The Fade haircut as a generic name refers to the hair on the sides and back being faded right until the hairline, so it is at the hairline of the sides and back of your head where the hair “disappears”. A Fade and a taper haircut are usually interchanged (and usually part of short hairstyles) but a taper need not end with no hair at the hairline, so be careful when asking your barber or hairdresser for a Fade and/or Taper haircut! The Fade haircut can also be referred to as a Regular Fade when distinguishing from the other types of fades. High Fade haircut A High Fade haircut has the hair disappearing anywhere within a two-inch-high area below the top of the hair (many times even lower than two inches), hence the adjective “High” before the “Fade” term. A High Fade haircut is usually asked by black men at barbershops as a High Fade requires the scalp to be of a natural tone and color as the skin on the face. In white men, the scalp is usually paler than the skin on the face so a High Fade haircut for white men doesn’t usually look very good for the first couple of days as the scalp takes time to tan naturally to the same skin tone of the face. Low Fade haircut A Low Fade haircut has the hair disappearing lower than a High Fade haircut but higher than a Regular Fade haircut. The hair for a Low Fade haircut usually disappears half way through the sides and back of the head and about an inch before the natural hairline of the sides and back of the head; the actual line of fading is up to the preference of the male getting the haircut. High Top Fade haircut The High Top Fade haircut is a High Fade haircut with the hair on the top of the head trimmed vertically so that the hair (on the top) lays vertically to the scalp and has no sharp edges around the circumference of the head. The High Top Fade haircut used to be a very-popular haircut among black men in the 1980s but it lost its popularity in the late 1990s. A male who help popularize the High Top Fade haircut was Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The High Top Fade haircut is an excellent haircut for men with curly hair and with curl types IV and V as such tightly-coiled curls have no problem standing vertically at medium and even long lengths. Temple Fade The Temple Fade has the hair disappearing low (i.e. Low Fade) but with the transition between hair lengths being more abrupt. The Temple Fade has the first one inch of scalp around the hairline of the sides and back being faded from skin (starting from the hairline) to about half an inch in length (at the end of the one-inch distance), and then the hair is rapidly tapered up in length (i.e. increased in hair length) to about one inch to two inches (again, the final length is decided by the male getting the haircut). Sometimes, the Temple Fade may include the fade being done on the hairline of the forehead too. The Temple Fade is also known as a Blowout, Afro Blow Out, Brooklyn Fade and Temp Fade, and, as with all haircuts, the actual jargon used to denominate a Temple Fade will vary according to the region and barber and/or hairdresser doing the haircut. Bear in mind that the Temple Fade can also be mistakenly assumed for a Low Fade, and this is especially so with barbers and hairdressers who are not acquainted with the Temple Fade. Conclusion to the Fade haircut The Fade haircut has five types: Regular Fade, High Fade, Low Fade, High Top Fade and Temple Fade. Regardless of the type, the Fade haircut has the

Here’s where Colorado’s facial hair loyalties lie

Here’s where Colorado’s facial hair loyalties lie, according to study By: Nick Wills DENVER (KDVR) – To some, it’s been a topic of discussion reserved solely for the grizzly and gruff, but following the recent release of a pristinely trimmed study, both beard-havers and have-nots from across Colorado can now weigh in on regional stances regarding facial hair fashion. The month leading into December carries the nickname “No Shave November,” which is a reference to the month-long preserving of the hair that grows from one’s face. With the colder months comes a need to bundle up, and for those capable of cultivating a natural face warmer, known alternatively as a beard or mustache, November is the month for building your facial hair’s wintry foundations. Experts over at StyleSeat, realizing that there are differences in approaches to this follicle-focused art form, have broken down the favorite beard and mustache style that the residents of each state hold aloft and which ones that belong in a clog in the drain of your sink. Where Colorado’s facial hair loyalties lie When it comes to the national consensus, StyleSeat’s study revealed that the most popular beard styles are as follows: The Goatee The Full Beard Mutton Chops Chin Straps Coloradans didn’t veer too far from the median on this vector with full beards winning the most popular beard style for the Centennial State. According to the national consensus, the most popular mustache styles are: English Pencil Lampshade Coloradans again stuck with the pack regarding the style of facial covering that naturally forms just above the average male mouth. The study showed that the state’s favorite style was English. There is a wide array of occurrences that could lead to the loss of your facial hair during the time of year when it’s needed most. So, for those of you maintaining your beard, mustache or patch of soul, be sure to keep your trimmer charged, your facial hair hydrated and always be ready to provide “beard-motional support” for those still striving to join the non-shaving masses next November. How to Determine Your Hair Type

How to Determine Your Hair Type By: Prose Proper hair care is important not just for outward appearances, but also for your overall health. Different techniques are required to treat specific hair types. One of the easiest ways to maximize your hair care efforts is to make sure you know your hair type and are treating it accordingly. The best way to do this is to take a hair type quiz. Having a better understanding of your hair type can help you select products that will be the most beneficial to you. How well do you care for your hair? Take our hair type quiz below to find out. Five-minute hair type quiz Hair appearance Let’s start with your hair appearance. To accurately determine your hair type, let it dry naturally after your next wash. Once your hair has air-dried without product being added, is it: Straight? (with no curls) Wavy? (s-shaped curves) Curly? (prominent and defined loops) Tight Curls? (includes spirals and coils) Undefined coils? (varied curls and coils) Most people are able to easily recognize these hair types to identify which main category they fall into. Each category of hair has subqualities that help define each hair type. In fact, there are many different types of curls or coils and it can be hard to pinpoint where you fall exactly. Some people even have multiple curl patterns. If you’re someone who has multiple textures, choose the one that is most prominent throughout. Hair structure Once you know your primary hair type, it’s time to identify your hair structure. This is usually done by a strand test, which can be conducted by either sight or touch. For this hair type quiz, we’ll use the touch method, since it helps to more accurately determine the diameter of your hair. Take a piece of hair in between your fingers and rub it back and forth. If you don’t feel anything, your hair type is considered fine. If you can feel the hair in between your fingers your hair type is medium. If your hair feels thick in between your fingers , then your hair type is coarse. Hair porosity Your hair’s ability to absorb moisture and natural ingredients from sustainably sourced products is known as your hair porosity. Knowing your hair porosity can help you take better care of your hair because you’ll know how well it can retain protein and moisture. Let’s find out your hair porosity: Low porosity: Usually takes a long time to dry without using a blow dryer or other heat sources. This hair type has difficulty absorbing hair care products. Balanced porosity: Generally easy to maintain and has a natural bounce. Additionally, it can be easily styled without using a large amount of product. High porosity: Tends to dry quickly. Moisture can leave the hair just as easily as it can be absorbed. It usually requires a large quantity of hair product and may occasionally fizz. Unsure of how to determine your hair porosity? A common way is by doing the float test. Place a piece of hair in a glass of room temperature water. If the hair floats, then you probably have low porosity. Hair that sinks slowly is an indicator of even  porosity, whereas hair that sinks immediately means that your hair might have high porosity. You can also do other tests, such as spraying your hair with water and observing how long it takes to be absorbed. For example, hair that absorbs water quickly is a sign of high porosity hair. Scalp moisture The final section of this hair type quiz is designed to determine your scalp moisture. Which of these three scalp types most resembles your hair? Dry: Your hair strands are protected by sebum, a wax-like substance that helps prevent brittleness. If your scalp is dry and itchy, it’s usually from a lack of sebum being produced, which can lead to breakage. Oily: Does your hair feel greasy? Due to an overproduction of sebum, your hair may be attracting dirt, triggering a chemical reaction that may irritate the scalp and lead to dandruff. Balanced: A balanced scalp has an even amount of oil production. Now that you know your hair type come on in and we can help you with a great cut, style and product recommendations to keep your hair living its best life. Mug Shoppe

Do You Know Your Hair Type?

Do You Know Your Hair Type? by: Ashley Locke If you’ve ever found yourself wondering “what is my hair type,” you’ve come to the right place. Knowing your strand type is key to taking proper care of it. But figuring out exactly what type of tresses you have can sometimes be more confusing than it needs to be. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Below, we’re diving into the various hair types so that you can know which and for all which one you have. Straight Hair Types 1A Hair This strand type kicks off the straight hair category. One of the least common hair types, strands tend to be stick-straight and often thin and wispy.
