25 EXPERT HAIR CARE TIPS FOR MEN
25 EXPERT HAIR CARE TIPS FOR MEN: HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HAIR By:Urban Beardsman There’s no question that a man’s hair is an important part of his overall look. There’s so much to consider – style, length, when to cut it, what products to use – that it can be overwhelming at times. We’re here to help, however, with our hair care tips for men. We’ll cover everything from how to take care of hair daily, to how to improve hair quality, and what to do (and not do) when you’re letting your hair grow out. In the end, we think you’ll have enough knowledge to make your daily hair care routine more effective than ever. THE BEST HAIR CARE TIPS FOR BEGINNERS 1. DRYING YOUR HAIR THE RIGHT WAY If you’re like a lot of men, you step out of the shower after washing and/or conditioning your hair and rub it vigorously with a towel to help dry it. Don’t do it. The fact is, your hair is very susceptible to damage when it’s wet, and rubbing wet hair with a towel causes some of the hair to become caught in the threads of the towel and stretches hairs past their breaking point. In turn, this causes damage to the outer layers of hair, as well as split ends and frizziness. Instead, pat dry your hair after you shake out excess water while gently stroking it in the direction it grows. You also need to take caution when blow drying your hair. Honestly, the best way to dry your hair is to air-dry it, but blow drying may be your best option on those days when you’re running short on time. Some important things to remember when using a hair dryer are to use the lowest heat settings possible, and to always leave your hair slightly damp to make sure you aren’t over-drying it. 2. GO EASY ON THE HEAT We just talked about using a lower heat setting if you have to blow dry your hair, cutting down on any heat is a general rule for the typical men’s hair care routine. There’s nothing like a hot shower, especially when the temperatures outside dip below freezing, but hot water wreaks havoc on your hair because it strips much of the essential oils from your hair and scalp, which leads to dryness. Again, the best way to dry your hair is to let it air dry. If you use a hairdryer, cut back on the heat, and leave your hair slightly damp so you won’t be tempted to over dry it. 3. WEAR HATS SPARINGLY Sometimes you just want to rock a hat or a cap but don’t overdo it. Tight hats can cause hair damage and loss because they pull too hard on the hair’s roots. Wear loose-fitting hats if possible. 4. DON’T DO A COMB-OVER – EVER OK, so your hair is thinning on top while you still have a fair amount of it on the sides. Please don’t make the awful decision to cover the bare spots on top of your head with a comb-over. It’s never a good look and may remind people of the creepy uncle that keeps showing up at their family reunions. And most women will run – make that sprint – from a man with a comb-over. Do yourself a favor and get a haircut that suits your thinning style instead. Hopefully these tips will help you achieve the look you want in a hairstyle but, most importantly, help you to keep your hair as healthy as possible. Like anything else, strong, healthy hair is achieved through consistent effort and the right knowledge. 5. DON’T OVERDO IT WITH PRODUCTS There’s nothing wrong with using hair gels, waxes, and even hairspray for getting the style and look that you want. But, using too much product can make your hair look unnatural and heavy, so use only the amount that you really need instead of applying excess amounts. Here’s a quick primer on hair products that can help you make the right choices for your hair type: Gel – Gives you the wet look that stays in place. It’s a high-shine, high-hold product. Putties – Putties are high-hold, low shine and aren’t as stiff as gels. Wax – There’s no question that wax holds your hair in place. It is tougher to get out of your hair because it’s oil-based. Pomade – Pomade is great for achieving retro looks and also have a high shine. Pomades tend to have a lesser hold than other products. Paste – Paste is a good option for you if you have medium to long hair. They usually have medium shine and hold. Muds & Clays – Because muds and clays are dryer than other products for men’s hair, they tend to have lower shine. Muds and clays range from low to high hold and everything in between. Sea Salt Spray – Sea Salt Spray is a great option for achieving textured, matte hair that is touchable and moves naturally. 6. WASH, BUT DON’T REPEAT One of the great myths about washing your hair is that you need to shampoo it, rinse it, and then repeat the process once more. Not only is a double-wash unnecessary, but it may also dry out your hair. HAIR TIPS FOR DIFFERENT HAIR TYPES & STYLES 7. GROWING LONG HAIR: A GUIDE Deciding to let your hair grow long is not much different than deciding to grow a full beard, i.e., you need time, patience, and an idea of what you want. Let’s break it down and take a closer look; you’ll also want to check out our video to gain a better understanding of what we’re talking about. HAVE A PLAN Take an honest look at the reasons and your goals for growing long hair. It’s a commitment, as well as something that needs to fit in with your lifestyle. You also need to make sure you have the extra time for your grooming routine, because longer hair requires a bit more time
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIRCUT FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIRCUT FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE By: Cillian O’Connor Like your clothes, haircuts aren’t one-size-fits-all. But unlike your clothes, you can’t take a crap haircut off after a day of fielding abuse from your colleagues. Which is why—before going under the barber’s scissors—it’s worth knowing which is the best haircut for your face shape. After all, an extra inch here or a smattering of facial hair there can make all the difference. Whether you’re looking for haircuts for round faces, long or rectangular faces, square faces, heart-shaped faces, diamond-shaped faces, or triangle-shaped faces, we’ve got you covered. And no, you can’t have one of each face. Unless you’re a Batman villain. WHAT’S MY FACE SHAPE? The first step to figuring out which hairstyle suits you is determining your face shape. Take a look at the illustration below and find a mirror to compare your face to these different male face shapes. There are more detailed instructions at the bottom of this article if you can’t tell. HAIRCUTS FOR ROUND FACES Circular with a rounded chin and no obvious lines or angles, a round face shape benefits from a haircut that lends it some definition. Whether you’ve got some extra baby fat and are looking for haircuts for chubby faces, or your face just lacks angles, consider one of these hairstyles to suit your face. “If you’ve got a round face shape, think square,” says Stevens. “Since round faces have little in the way of natural angles, you need to create the illusion of structure with your hair. A style with height on the top that’s taken tight at the sides such as a pompadour or a flat top works well to add structure, as do front fringes.” “Square corners in the high recession area of your hair will sharpen up any soft edges,” adds Robinson. “A full square beard will also help thin the chin area, giving the appearance of a more chiseled jaw.” HAIRCUTS FOR LONG FACES Also considered a rectangular face shape or an oblong face shape, long faces fall somewhere between an oval and a square, but require a subtly tweaked hairstyle to ensure the face doesn’t appear even longer than it is. “Because a rectangular face looks longer, it’s important to avoid taking the sides too short if keeping length on the top, as this would only accentuate the length of the face,” explains Nicolaou. “Try a well-proportioned style that doesn’t take the sides too short or leave too much length on top.” Taking that advice, try a style that lets the hair fall to the sides and/or across the forehead to add width and ensure your face doesn’t appear narrower than it is. Finally, never pair with a Duck Dynasty beard, says Robinson. “A full beard only elongates the face, so instead try facial hair that ranges in length from stubble to a short beard to fill out any gaps.” HAIRCUTS FOR OVAL FACES Seen as the genetic jackpot for women, an oval face shape may not be the most alpha of face shapes for men, but it’s a good canvas for experimentation when it comes to men’s haircuts. Symmetrical and well-proportioned, an oval face shape does pretty much any hairstyle justice, so—you lucky boy—the choice is very much yours. That said, there are a couple of minor caveats to ensure you optimize your ovalness. “The trick with an oval face shape is to wear your hair off the forehead to create some volume and angles on top,” says Aveda master barber Stelios Nicolaou. “The most suitable style is a classic short back and sides and slightly longer on the top, with a side-swept parting.” You’ll also want to avoid a forward fringe. “Too much heaviness on the forehead softens features and increases roundness of the face,” says celebrity hairstylist Jamie Stevens. And feel free to ditch the beard, says Ruffians creative director Denis Robinson. “You don’t need facial hair to fill out any disproportionate gaps in this case, so feel free to go clean-shaven.” HAIRCUTS FOR SQUARE FACES Considered the masculine ideal, a square face shape is characterized by a razor sharp jawline, even proportions and an overall chiseled appearance. Grrr. Like the oval, it’s a great foundation for most styles and is versatile enough to work with both extremely short and longer hairstyles—from buzz cuts to French crops to quiffs. Just bear in mind that the shorter you go, the more you look like you’ve just been conscripted. Not that that won’t serve you well. Classic, neat haircuts complement a square shape best—think close fades, side partings and short layers,” says Stevens. Some light stubble also gives the sharpness of your jawline a little welcome texture without blurring its line. HAIRCUTS FOR HEART-SHAPED FACES Wide at the temples and hairline, gradually narrowing to a point at the chin, the (fairly rare) heart-shaped face benefits from a few optical illusions to make it appear better proportioned. “Avoid cuts that are very tight, as these will accentuate the narrowness of the chin and the width of the forehead,” says Stevens. “A medium-length swept look is the safest bet.” Mid-length and long hairstyles that are kept reasonably thin and light soften the heart shape’s strong forehead. Facial hair is also key in this case, adding some much-needed bulk to a narrow chin and jawline, says Robinson. “As with the diamond face shape, a beard helps a heart shape gain fullness in the lower, narrower half of the head.” HAIRCUTS FOR DIAMOND-SHAPED FACES Narrow in the chin and brow, with width in the cheeks, the diamond face shape is one of the rarer face shapes for men. Because of that, it has some specialist requirements to ensure it looks its namesake. “Hairstyles that add width at the forehead and chin area are your best bet,” says Stevens. “Fringes work well to add texture to the forehead, while longer styles that can be tucked behind the ears are great for accentuating a diamond shape’s bone structure.” Don’t, however, take the sides too short—given the width of the cheekbones, a hairstyle that’s particularly short at the sides will only make your
13 Hairstyles To Try Before You Die
By: Dana Oliver As someone who switches up their hairdo two to three times a month, I’m a huge advocate for taking hair risks. And not just because you can always grow or color it back, but I believe there is something extremely liberating about changing your hair. In American society, women and young girls are often judged and ridiculed for their hairstyles. As a result, we either jump on the mass beauty bandwagon and copy each other, or we cower in fear of not truly loving what we have on top. But that all ends right here, right now. So I encourage you to take these 13 hair risks before you die. Trust me, you’ll feel and look amazing! Shave your head… or buzz at least one side. Wear hair extensions. Grow your hair really long… then chop it off. Grow your hair really long… then chop it off. Show off your facial features with a pixie haircut. Grab some scissors and cut your own bangs. Work some serious hair layers. Experiment with ombre hair. Be bold and get cornrows. Rock platinum blonde hair. Throw on a wig (and sunglasses) for a really incoginito look. Wild out with brightly colored hair in pink, purple or yellow hues. Embrace your natural hair texture. Which one are you ready to try? Hit us up!
The Perfect Hairstyle For You According To Your Zodiac Sign – For Men
The Perfect Hairstyle For You According To Your Zodiac Sign – For Men By: Indastro A good hairstyle does not necessarily have to be very elaborate and time taking. It just needs you to take care of your hairs well, and also give them the required care and treatment, so that they remain well-maintained and in the best of their health. It also adds to your natural beauty and enhances the way you look and present yourself. A bad hairstyle might even send the wrong signals to people around you, and also let them project the thought about you that you might be lacking in self-esteem or might be lazy. A good hairstyle would affect you in more ways than one, and you would also realize that it complements your features well, and makes you look all the more attractive and smart. Vedic Astrology also has some guidelines as per zodiac signs, as to which hairstyle would best suit you and complement you for you better good. Aries Man Headstrong, adventurous, confident, and born to be a leader, an Aries will always be on his heels and be busy throughout. This will demand him to have a very clean, simple, and classic styled haircut, as it would suit best. Military cut, or tapered cut, crew cut, are ones that would give them the edge and also bring into focus their best features. They would need a skilled barber to also give them a haircut that would be on point and never mess with the styling and precision. Using a styling gel would also help in keeping the fly-ways at place, and to give that clean look. Taurus Man A man who is steady, grounded, and attractive at the same time, a Taurus man would be the change and call out for renaissance among his peers. You would like to sport you hair on the longer side, and so would choose hairstyles that suit your long hair. You might want your wavy hair be tied into a pony or even a bun after growing it long. Or you could also give your curly hair the best products to retain their natural curls, and look suave with your attractive features. Hair products would help you get the kind of styling you aspire to, and let you look magnificent and a head turner among the crowds. Gemini Man One of the most brilliant among the signs, a Gemini man would not go for a chic hairstyle or haircut which would make them feel like they have experimented too much. Though they are flirty, fun-loving, and outgoing, yet they would shy away from, trying trending cuts or even while coloring their hair in some different color. They would play safe and like a kind of styling that would give them a youthful appearance, and prefer a cut like that Mohawk or the like, that would look good on them even if the hair had no product on or was untamed. In this way, they would experience the looks of both the worlds, and be suave and clean at the same time. Cancer Man The most emotional and sensitive among the signs, a Cancer man would be attached to his hair and would like to keep a hairstyle that reminded him of his youthful days in college. Since you have a chivalrous personality, you would like to give your hair a styling that is evergreen, and classic, like a clean cut or even grow it out to wear them longer like in older days. You might even keep it quite short or even keep a baldhead. Such haircuts would need you to schedule your visits to the barber on a timely basis, so that you maintain the style and avoid being out of style. Even if have a longer mane, try to keep it appealing by maintaining it well. Leo Man Being true to a Lion’s nature, you possess authority and like to be the center of attraction in get-togethers. You would like to keep your jovial and happy nature intact, and wear styles and keep haircuts that represent your jolly nature. Keeping an eye on your royal nature, you might also keep hairstyles that reflect your nature, which would have length and volume to themselves. Naturally, the thick mane you have would need due care and you would have to use products to maintain their health, shine, and luster. Your hair’s natural oils would definitely help you grow a healthy volume of hair. Virgo Man The fun-loving Virgo Man is someone who is always on-the-go and is ideally a lover of cleanliness and a simple and suave style. Since you are so peculiar about investing very less time into your hair and daily beauty routine, and one that would need low maintenance, you would ideally go for hairstyles that look polished and give you a sleek look. You would thereby prefer shorter haircuts and style your hair in a way that lets you have a clean hairstyle, without the need of much products or setting them frequently. However, that would also mean that you would need to schedule visits to the barber a little more than others, as only that gives a shorter haircut the needed sleekness and polish. To consistently cater to your wish of being always looking on point, you would have to maintain the cut and style, and using a little pomade or wax, or even oiling at times, would not be a bad idea to keep your hair tidy, we believe. Libra Man You are the eternal lover of beauty, elegance, and all things that have an aesthetic appeal to them. Owing to this nature, you would definitely want to have a hairstyle that speaks highly of yourself on the style quotient. You are a charmer, and shine bright in the eyes of the opposite sex. Being that, you would not want to let go off the attention, right? Your style is such that you would not shy away
Diet’s Impact on Hormones and Hair Loss
Diet’s Impact on Hormones and Hair Loss By: Forks Over Knives Can foods help you keep a healthy head of hair? It is a fascinating area of research—and one that is by no means finished. Let me share what we know. WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS? Common age-related hair loss is influenced by genes, of course. In some families, baldness runs up and down the family tree. But the process is entirely dependent on hormones, as was dramatically demonstrated by Yale University’s James B. Hamilton in 1942. Hamilton showed that men who, for whatever reason, had been castrated before puberty never lost their hair. Even if every last male in their family had gone bald, it did not happen to them. Without testosterone, the genes for hair loss did not express themselves. Hamilton also found that when men who were losing their hair were castrated (for medical reasons having nothing to do with hair loss), their hair loss suddenly stopped. If castrated men were then given supplemental testosterone, hair loss kicked in. If the testosterone treatments were stopped, hair loss stopped, too. Here is what is going on: In the hair follicles, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the baldness trigger. In genetically susceptible individuals, it causes hair follicles to gradually shrink the size (length and diameter) of the hairs they produce until finally they stop producing hair altogether. Some parts of the scalp—especially the front and crown—are particularly sensitive to DHT, while others—the sides and back of the head—resist it. And on the face and chest, DHT has the opposite effect. It stimulates follicles to produce thick, curly hair. The conversion of testosterone to DHT can be blocked by finasteride, a drug marketed under the brand name Propecia. Rogaine (minoxidil) works differently. It is used topically to keep follicles functioning normally. FOODS AND HAIR RETENTION So, how do foods fit into this? For starters, researchers noticed that baldness was less common among Asians than in whites. But as Asian countries began to Westernize their diets, baldness was one of the conditions that appeared to be increasingly common. Japan is a case in point. As its diet became Westernized in the latter half of the 20th century, many aspects of health changed. Although most of the attention went to the massive rise in breast cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, dermatologists also noted that baldness became more common. The same phenomenon was observed in Korea. Doctors in a dermatology clinic found that baldness seemed to be striking earlier and more often. A traditional Asian diet is based mainly on plant-based foods, rather than meats and dairy products, and tends to be very modest in fat. A low-fat, plant-based diet encourages your body to build more SHBG—sex hormone–binding globulin. SHBG reins in testosterone and keeps it inactive until it is needed. That’s good. You will have more than enough testosterone for your daily needs, without the excesses that could affect your scalp. One more thing: In 2009, researchers compared 80 young men with progressive hair loss to 80 men without hair loss. The balding men were more likely to have insulin resistance. Other studies found the same thing: Insulin resistance is linked to hair loss in both men and women. This means that the cells of the body (especially the muscles and liver) have become unresponsive to insulin, as a result of the buildup of fat inside the cells. In turn, insulin resistance causes metabolic changes that affect your whole body. It can impair blood circulation to the follicles and contribute to the loss of the follicles’ ability to produce hair. This can happen to women, too. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome, in particular, have higher levels of testosterone than usual and often have insulin resistance. Many have thinning hair. There are other causes of hair loss, too. Thyroid disease and various medications can cause hair loss. KEEPING HEALTHY SKIN AND HAIR To maintain healthy skin and hair, I would encourage you to: Avoid animal products. Avoid adding oils in cooking, and favor oil-free foods at restaurants. Avoid oily foods (e.g., peanut butter, avocados) until you know how they affect you. Avoid added sugars. In anecdotal reports, for whatever reason, sugary foods seem to make hair lifeless. Have adequate protein from plant sources. Beans and bean products, such as tofu, tempeh, and soymilk, give you plenty of protein without the negatives of dairy products or meat. Anecdotally, some people have found that having extra plant protein helps keep their hair fuller. Have plenty of vegetables and fruits. Their antioxidants will help protect your skin. Protect your skin from excess sun exposure. Although hormone shifts can have profound effects on your skin and hair, a healthful diet can be powerful, too. See what healthful foods can do for how you look, in addition to how you feel. Eat right to Balance Hair Loss and Come in so We can Help Balance that Wonky Fade!
3 Unexpected Ways Meditation Can Give You Better Hair & Skin
3 Unexpected Ways Meditation Can Give You Better Hair & Skin By: DoYou I was shocked when my meditation teacher revealed her age. It was in a classroom full of dozens of people and out of her mouth came a number that was 15 years older than where I had placed her. There is no doubt that part of my misperception was due to her vibrant energy, but I have to admit, another part was purely due to her appearance. Her skin literally radiated. Aside from the crow’s feet around her eyes – indicative of the amount of time she spent smiling – the wrinkles you would have found on the faces of other women her age were absent. Her hair was dark, thick and shiny. She was over 60 years old. 1. Your Skin and Hair Respond to Your Levels of Stress. Anyone who has lived through puberty knows that when your hormones are out of balance, your skin will showcase this with vivid displays of acne, hives, dry flakes, and/or excessive irritation. Likewise, those who have lived through (or watched a loved one live through) pregnancy knows that drastic hormonal changes can also cause significant hair loss. Meditation studies show a significant positive impact on our endocrine systems. Specifically, the practice is effective for lowering levels of the stress-response hormone cortisol (in one study, after spending just four days practicing mindfulness meditation, the average participant’s level of cortisol had dropped by 20%). Additionally, “long-term” practice (defined in one particular study as 12 minutes a day for 8 weeks) reverses stress-related aging patterns by reducing triggers to the inflammatory genes associated with age-related wrinkle production. 2. Meditation Increases Circulation to Your Head. The better the blood flow in our heads, necks and faces, the better our skin and hair will appear. Improved circulation will carry higher levels of oxygen through our bloodstream to nourish our skin and hair cells. When circulation is strong, it is more capable of flushing cellular debris and ridding wastes from our bodies. One study showed that practicing meditation for 30 minutes a day for 5 days significantly increased cerebral blood flow in the left frontal lobes of participants. As an added bonus, increased activity (via increased blood flow) in this area also correlated with improved attention span, better ability to self-regulate emotions, and increased instances of positive moods. 3. When Your Breathing Improves, More Toxins Are Released in Your Breath than Through Sweating. Our bodies rid themselves of toxins in four ways: breathing, sweating, urination and defecation. I never realized, until I started practicing yogic breathwork (pranayama), just how central breathing was to this quartet. According to Gay Hendricks PhD, “The human body is designed to discharge 70% of its toxins through breathing.” Meditation improves our awareness of our own breath and slows down the rate at which we breathe, leading to deeper breaths. In fact, experienced meditators have been shown to have slower respiration rates outside of their meditation practice as well as during their practice. This slower breath rate leads to increased discharge of wastes through the respiratory cycle. You could argue that committing to a meditation practice for the sake of appearances misses the mark, and on the surface, it does. There are so many other reasons to explore meditation – spiritual growth, cultivating compassion for others, and refining your mental focus to name a few. But appearances play a role in revealing that there is something undeniably powerful about the practice of meditation. If having better skin and hair health is what motivates you to practice meditation, good on ya! You are stepping into a practice that will transform you on the outside, as well as the inside. Is Vegan Shampoo Better for Your Hair?
Is Vegan Shampoo Better for Your Hair? Vegan shampoo isn’t inherently better for your mane. Much like vegan food (newsflash: the KFC Quorn fillet burger is not a health food) it’s more to do with the priorities of the company who made it, use it and promote it. Though, if you buy from brand that uses natural ingredients, it’s going to leave your strands in better shape that a cheap mass market alternative. Although it isn’t true for all products (beware brands who are jumping on the vegan bandwagon without considering the rest of their ethics!), if you find a good vegan brand that genuinely cares about their product then it’s more likely to be better for your hair, because “it’ll contain natural ingredients that benefit the hair’s structure rather than just sitting on the surface or worse, coating the hair and making it dull”, says Karine Jackson, owner of a Vegan hair salon in London. Most cheap hair care products ultimately sit on the hair like mascara rather than fortifying the hair and scalp health. It may look alright, but over time it limits your hairs ability to absorb the good stuff. But, ultimately: ‘The main advantage of vegan hair care is the impact on the environment. What goes down the drain ends up in the ocean, therefore affecting sea life, as well as impacting the longevity of bees’ existence, which is detrimental to our eco system.’ Point being? Naturally-sourced ingredients, used by a consciously ethical vegan brand, are better for the planet than traditional formulas. Read More about Vegan Hair Products. How Does the Moon Affect Your Hair?
HOW DOES THE MOON AFFECT YOUR HAIR? By: Om’echaye There’s a common belief that the moon not only affects your body and your mood but also your hair growth, but How does it work? Although not fully understood by science, it’s thought that the moon is a regulator of growth (ie. has a direct pull on living things) and that certain activities can be performed in line with the monthly cycle. The theory goes that the powers of expansion are strongest when the moon is getting bigger (waxing), becoming nice and full and bright in the sky, on its path to being a full moon. During this waxing lunar phase, a hair cut will encourage growth right up until the full moon. Think of it as the “Werewolf effect”: the full moon makes hair grow fast, thick, long and luscious. When you cut your hair, you remove the dead ends, which keeps your hair healthy. Just like a plant, any dead parts of your hair will sap nutrients from the healthy parts, making it hard to grow. So if you trim hair while the moon’s pull is strongest, you have a better chance of incorporating natural elements and encouraging root strength and growth. It’s thought that the body (and hair) is readily ingesting what it’s given during this phase, so this is also the best time to use masks and conditioners, as chances are they’ll penetrate even deeper and are likely to be more effective. The sun makes its way through the zodiac signs, taking one year to complete its circuit, and in this way we find birth signs. Born in November? Likely a Scorpio. April baby? An Aries, and so on. As the fastest astral body, the moon is far quicker and takes around a month to move through the signs in the sky, spending one and a half to two days in each. On its journey through the zodiac, the moon completes the monthly lunar cycle, changing from a new moon to full, then full circle. When the moon passes through the watery zodiac signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), it’s thought energies are more fertile. Taurus, Libra and Capricorn also fall under this category, though not as much as the three water signs. The fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are the most dry and arid, with Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius following suit. When the moon is passing through a fertile sign, repair, recovery and growth is promoted. The dry signs are the best for permanent removals like waxing or laser (leaving little fertile energy to support regrowth). So the best time to remove unwanted hair is before a new moon when it’s passing through Aries. The best time for a haircut if you want lovely, long locks is the full moon in a water sign. Let’s go to the Moon and Back with a New Cut, come on in!
WHICH OF THE 7 STAGES OF HAIR LOSS ARE YOU?
WHICH OF THE 7 STAGES OF HAIR LOSS ARE YOU? By: Man For Himself Male pattern baldness is the progressive thinning of hair in a defined pattern, generally beginning above both the temples. It frequently happens during someone’s late 20s and becomes more pronounced as men age. However, hair loss is a gradual process and can be unnoticeable from the get-go. This is why James Hamilton devised a scale that can tell you the severity of hair loss you’re currently experiencing – before it’s too late to do anything about it. This scale is called The Hamilton-Norwood scale and is used to determine the extent of male pattern baldness, on the basis of the type and size of the area involved. The scale was developed in the 1950s by James Hamilton and then picked up by O’Tar Norwood in the 1970s. It also acts as a visual tool doctors and patients use to track the progression of the condition so they know what to expect next. The Norwood Scale is broken down into the following stages: STAGE 1 In Stage 1, loss of hair is hardly noticeable and the hairline shows minimal recession. While it varies and is very uncommon, some men retain a Stage 1 hair pattern throughout their lives. STAGE 2 A slight recession begins to show in Stage 2. You can see the loss of hair begin at the temples and show early signs of the M, V, or U-shaped hairline. STAGE 3 As the scale progresses, the more visible the baldness becomes. Stage 3 displays a significant loss of hair at the temples and frontal area of the scalp and a pronounced M, V, or U-shaped hairline will begin to appear. Balding spots are going to start showing up as well. Stage 3 Vertex also is common in men, wherein the hair loss starts at the crown or vertex. STAGE 4 Hair across the front of the scalp, crown, and temples are a lot thinner in Stage 4. Receding of the hairline appears more severe and a tiny band of hair separates the two affected areas of your scalp. STAGE 5 The band of hair in the middle of your head that connects to either side of your scalp will start to look narrower. This is also where the common ‘horseshoe pattern’ becomes more prominent. Hair loss is a lot more difficult to treat at this stage. STAGE 6 Stage 6 is where severe hair loss at the crown is going to be apparent. The bald spots at the temples will start to merge with your thinning scalp while that band of hair disappears. STAGE 7 Hair at the top of your head is completely gone at this stage and only a fine band remains across the sides of your scalp. Constant exposure to these chemicals can result in skin and eye irritation, endocrine disruption. The Keune So Pure line allows you to shampoo, condition, style and even color without the risk. Come into Mug Shoppe and check out the Keune products we carry.
